InTASC Standard #3: Learning Environment

The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. (InTASC, 2013, page 21)

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the summer semester of 2021, in my EDUC 101 Intro to Teaching class, I created a plan for a family fun night. The theme of this family fun night was that we were going on an adventure together and learning basic camping knowledge and learning about community resources that were available to them. With this family fun night, I designed several activities and stations for each student to participate in with their family.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I learned how to create a flyer that could be passed out to the students for an event like this. I learned about the community resources available to me to use in my future classroom. I had to research several different activities that would go along with camping. From this activity, I learned that it is easier to have family involvement when you have food there for everyone to eat because sometimes the time of the day can be hectic, but if dinner is being served at the event, then it’s more likely for the family to be able to attend. Several of the activities were hands-on, and the students could go around at their own pace. I believe this artifact goes great with the Montessori theory (Ruhl, C. 2021). These stations promote independence and choice. With the activities that were present during this family night, students had the choice of participating in different activities on their own.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence in the InTASC Standard:

This family fun night artifact best demonstrates my competence in InTASC standard 3 because I was able to create a positive social learning environment that supported each student while collaborating with the local community, as well as other teachers that would be involved during this evening. These stations were very active and engaging for all students and their families to be able to participate.
