InTASC Standard #9: Professional learning and ethical practice

The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner. (InTASC, 2013)

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the spring semester of 2022 in EDUC 250 Educational Psychology, I have chosen two artifacts that represent this standard. I participated in TechWise training in which I had the opportunity to learn about different coding activities that I could incorporate into the classroom. My other artifact is the suicide prevention training that I participated in to better my understanding and knowledge of how to prevent someone from partaking in suicide.

Analysis of What I Learned:

During the TechWise training, I was able to continue my ongoing education in technology, in which I will be able to adapt this practice to assist learners and their families to best accomplish tasks with their learning. I learned how to use the tools from TechWise to help learners better understand concepts that they otherwise would have a hard time with. I learned how to code a robot and how much fun and how much it involves active learning. From my suicide prevention training, I learned a lot about how to help others that are struggling with the thoughts of suicide and help prevent it. This I plan to use in my everyday life. I learned just how important this topic is to everyone, not just in school as a teacher, but just as a human in the world. I learned several different tools and resources within my community that I would be able to recommend to others in a time of need such as a hotline that I could call as well as a number that could be texted 24/7.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence in the InTASC Standard:

These two artifacts demonstrate my competence in standard 9 because they are ongoing training that I have gone through to continue my education to benefit my students in the classroom as well as their families and other community members. Carol Dweck's theory of a growth mindset is a theory that I firmly believe goes well with the training that I have done by expanding my knowledge on these topics. (Street, 2021) These pieces of training were out-of-the-box thinking and training for me. These both helped promote my knowledge from a small scope to a bigger scope within education. From my training with TechWise, I will be able to adapt the practices that I learned by showing other colleagues ways to help their students improve and gain more knowledge within technology. I learned websites that would be useful to help my learners meet the Indiana academic standards within technology. I will continue to share this knowledge with others and use it in the classroom with my students to help them better understand concepts. The suicide prevention training shows my competence as well by showing that I am continuing my knowledge to better support my students within the classroom and ensure their safety within my classroom. I will also be able to take my knowledge within my community and with other colleagues.
