InTASC Standard #7: Planning for Instruction

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context. (InTASC, 2013, page 34)

Brief Description of Evidence:

 In the fall semester of 2021 during my EDUC 224 Introduction to Scientific Inquiry course, three other students and I  created a science-based lesson plan. We created this lesson to be taught to fourth-grade students. This lesson plan involved the eight phases of the moon and why they occur. We were able to cross-discipline science standards with reading standards. During the lesson plan, we presented a slideshow with information about the phases of the moon, once we were finished explaining we gave them Oreos and they were to create the phases of the moon in Oreos while using the creme inside, this was their lab activity.  

 

Analysis of What I Learned:

 During the creation of this lesson plan I had to do a lot of research about the phases of the moon so I would have a better understanding of the phases in order to teach fourth graders about them. I learned how to successfully cross-discipline subjects with other subjects in order to help each student learn as much as they could in one lesson. I learned how to better my communication skills with other future teachers. I didn’t know the number of resources that are there for teachers to take advantage of, but during this lesson I found several of these resources to be very helpful. I also learned that students really enjoy hands-on activities. 


How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

 The lesson plan “Moon Phases” corresponds well with my competence in the InTASC Standard #7. This lesson plan shows great examples of my students being able to draw their previous knowledge as well as the curriculum for this grade level, an example of this would consist of their previous knowledge from grade 3 about the solar system. With the knowledge that all learners learn differently, we used several different approaches such as having a visual aid, a reading piece, as well as hands-on activities. Bloom’s Taxonomy was used during this lesson plan. (Charlotte Ruhl, 2021) An example of this is that students have to remember what the 8 phases of the moon were, to then comprehend what these phases are, then each student had to create an example of the 8 phases and apply their knowledge to their assignment, in which they had an assessment in which they did good in.
